Connecticut Topographic Surveys

Many times, developers and property owners are asked to produce topographic maps of the areas on which they plan to make improvements. Land use agencies and commissions often require this information to assess whether or not the requested improvements fall in line with local ordinances and regulations. In such instances, a topographic survey is required. The resulting map will include terrain information and elevation data; in effect, a three-dimensional representation of the land will be produced.

Field-Generated Topography
When a compact area of land is involved, field-generated topography is typically the best way to go. This type of survey is fast and cost effective. It is suitable for house plans ans for small commercial sites. Most importantly, field-generated topographic surveys are highly accurate; they must conform to strict T-2 accuracy standards. As a result, the maps that result from such surveys are highly accurate and exceptionally useful from a development and construction standpoint.

Aerial Photogrammetry
For larger and more sprawling projects, it may be necessary to engage in aerial photogrammetry. Unlike field-generated topography, this type of survey can take weeks to complete. Photographs, aerial flight lines and other methods are used to conduct this type of survey. The maps that are produced from aerial photogrammetry are useful for broad site design work. Field topography can be used to provide more accurate details for areas that require it.

Additional Topography Sources
Several kinds of topographic maps are available to the general public. United States Geological Survey, or USGS, topography maps are popular examples; towns, cities and other jurisdictions often have their own versions available. These maps can be useful for the very early planning stages of a project; however, they do not provide the kind of accuracy that is needed for detailed design and construction plans. It is not uncommon for USGS maps to be used during the very initial stages of a project; later, aerial photgrammetry and field-generated topography will often be used. The end results are topographical maps that can be used to understand the general limitations of a property, which helps engineers and developers make accurate and efficient plans.
